The "World’s Largest Motorcycle Event" roars in Daytona Beach for 10 days in March. If you haven't been to Daytona Beach, for a while you will notice one major change. To protect the environment and to make the beach safer and more appealing to families, local governments have designated a portion of what is regarded as the core area of the beach as a "no-drive zone". For those who equate water with fun, the area overflows with options. First and foremost is the beach where the Main Street Pier and Boardwalk skirts the sea or hop on a narrated cruises on the Halifax River with manatees, herons, osprey, and dolphins often lead the way. Don't forget to climb the 175 foot Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse, built in 1887, for a view of the inlet and New Smyrna Beach.
This event has grown to become the second largest car show and swap meet in Florida each year, second only to the Thanksgiving weekend Turkey Run, which is also held at Daytona International Speedway. In 1999 there were over 2,500 collector cars and trucks on display and for sale at the big Spring Daytona Beach Car Show and Swap Meet. The 1999 Turkey Run featured 5,056 collector cars and trucks registered in the show alone, not including nearly 1,100 in the car corral, plus over 3,000 occupied vendor spaces. The event now fills the infield of the huge world-renowned racing facility known as Daytona International Speedway. The Turkey Run is not only Florida's biggest car show and swap meet, but it is also the biggest event of this type in the southeast each year.
